JULY 24–27: MORE THAN 400 BANDS, RIGHT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

For the third year in a row, OpenAir is partnering with The Denver Post Underground Music Showcase (UMS), one of Colorado’s biggest music festivals, featuring more than 400 local and national bands.

Performances will take place in 20 different venues along South Broadway in Denver. Catch local favorites like A. Tom Collins and Shady Elders, plus acts from the national scene, including Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Blonde Redhead and People Under the Stairs.

To kick things off, OpenAir is hosting a free preview party on Thursday, July 24 at Illegal Pete’s South Broadway. Hosts will broadcast performances by Ian Cooke, Chris Heckman of The Epilogues and Ark Life. OpenAir will also be on-site throughout UMS with contests, prizes and interactive activities—stop by the tent just outside the main stage to participate.

‘SUMMERFEST’ CONTINUES WITH EVENTS BOTH GRAND AND SMALL

Now through Aug. 17, CPR Classical is bringing you live broadcasts, artist interviews and in-studio performances from Colorado’s top classical music festivals as part of the 2014 “SummerFest” concert series.

Whether you enjoy awe-inspiring orchestral performances or intimate chamber music, the series offers something for every classical music enthusiast. CPR Classical host Jon Pinnow explains:

“There's so much great music in Colorado every summer, and the diverse 'SummerFest' schedule has attractive options for every curious ear. If you can't see these performances in person, we’re glad to share the music with you.”

If small ensemble music sparks your interest, don’t miss the Chamber Music broadcasts from Bravo! Vail, which include a July 22 performance of Bartók and Reich by pianists Anne-Marie McDermott and Gilles Vonsattel, and Third Coast Percussion. Watch a video of Anne-Marie, recorded in the CPR Performance Studio and hear what she had to say about her musical training in an interview with host Charley Samson.

For a live broadcast on a bigger scale, tune in to the “SummerFest” series finale at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17 from the Aspen Music Festival. The festival orchestra and the Colorado Symphony Chorus will join national soloists to share the music of Arvo Pärt, Mussorgsky and Beethoven. Robert Spano conducts the performance, which concludes with one of the best-known classical masterworks, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
